A Change of Direction

It’s with mixed emotions that I share some personal news: my husband has been offered a job transfer to London, and if all goes according to plan, we will be moving in May. As a result, I will be closing Books Inside Boxes, and the March 2026 box will be our final “road trip” box.

I’ve already begun the process of shutting down the business. Current subscriptions are being canceled, and all remaining boxes are now on sale. The last day of business will be Sunday, April 12th.

When I started Books Inside Boxes in the spring of 2023, I knew very little about running an online business—let alone a subscription box company. I had an idea that I believed in, and even more importantly, a mission to support indie bookstores.

At that time, I was working as a bookseller, feeling heartbroken as the company I worked for, Tattered Cover, teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. A few months later, it filed for Chapter 11 and was eventually sold to Barnes & Noble. While the sale wasn’t entirely negative, it did mean the loss of our beloved indie bookstore status, which was a tough pill to swallow.

The heart of Books Inside Boxes has always been promoting indie bookstores. I worked with these incredible stores across the country, purchasing their branded merchandise for the boxes and spotlighting them through blog posts and social media. I’ve had the honor of meeting so many passionate indie bookstore owners and booksellers, and I’ve seen firsthand how hard they work. Many of these stores are struggling, and it’s my hope that through Books Inside Boxes, you’ve discovered new-to-you indie bookstores—and maybe even visited one near you. As someone who’s worked at a struggling bookstore, I can assure you: every single purchase counts. Please continue to support these stores whenever you can.

In addition to indie bookstores, I’ve had the privilege of meeting authors, book reps, publicists, and small business owners. Most importantly, I’ve found a community of fellow book lovers—you! When I first started, I worried that no one would be interested, but as word spread, Books Inside Boxes grew. I can’t express enough how thrilling it’s been to see new subscribers join, orders coming through, and to receive your messages of support. You’ve made this journey unforgettable, and I’m so grateful for each and every one of you.

So, what’s next? Well, the road trip isn’t over yet. As a completist, it would drive me crazy not to finish reading my way through the states. I hope you’ll continue to join me! Although we won’t have monthly boxes or a subscription anymore, I plan to share monthly book recommendations and highlight state bookstores. I’m also thinking about starting a blog and possibly a virtual book club for anyone who’s interested. After we finish reading through the states, who knows? Maybe we’ll take the road trip abroad! More details will be coming soon, but I expect this new chapter of Books "No Longer" Inside Boxes to begin in June or July.
