March takes us to the state that holds the record for the highest air temperature ever recorded on Earth—134°F, the oldest known tree—a Great Basin bristlecone pine over 4,900 years old—and the tallest known tree—a Coast redwood soaring more than 380 feet. Wetsuits, skateboards, and popsicles were invented here, too. This month’s box celebrates the "Golden State" of California.
 
Our indie bookstore partner is Octavia’s Bookshelf. Located in Pasadena, the shop opened in February 2023 and is named after local author Octavia Butler, a pioneering voice in science fiction and speculative fiction. This beloved local store is one of our favorites, and their sticker and pen are included in the March box.
 
Keeping with the theme, we selected Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler as our featured title. Written in 1993 but set in 2024–2027, this modern classic explores climate crisis, wealth inequity, and societal unrest. It feels especially eerie now, as the fictional community closely resembles the Pasadena/Altadena area, which was devastated by fires last year.
 
California produces 80% of the world’s almonds. Enjoy rosemary garlic almonds from Giddy Up Nuts, a small-batch company founded in Los Angeles in 2013 that sources seasonings from fellow California businesses—the very definition of local.
 
You’ll also receive Honey & Lavender hand cream from 123 Farm, California’s largest organic lavender farm in Cherry Valley. The farm has hosted famous guests like Einstein and Hemingway.
 
Also included is a greeting card from Madi Can’t Stop Reading, a one-woman, book-themed design shop in Philadelphia, founded in 2022.
