September takes us to the smallest state and last of the original thirteen colonies to adopt statehood. It is the birthplace of authors Ann Hood, Cormac McCarthy, and H.P. Lovecraft. Toy maker Hasbro is headquartered here, and the state drink is Coffee Milk (similar to chocolate milk but made with coffee syrup.) This month we head to Rhode Island!
Our featured book is one of my favorite classics, Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. Set in the gilded age this is a story of the upper classes in New York and what happens when conventions are tested, and personal desires are at odds with obligations. Rhode Island serves as the vacation escape for the New Yorkers and the setting for pivotal moments in the story.
Heartleaf Books in Providence is our September indie bookstore partner. Heartleaf Books was founded by two siblings and started as a pop-up bookstore in 2021, opening a physical location a just over a year later. Their store logo sticker has been included in this month’s box.
Rhode Island is “The Ocean State” and this month you can smell the seaside with a bar of warm sand soap from Shore Soap Co. Founded in 2013 by a husband/wife duo, this small business is located in Providence, Rhode Island.
In The Age of innocence you will meet a very memorable society woman named Mrs. Mingott, who has a fondness for dogs. This Edith Wharton dog quote card is from Apartment 2 Cards. This small design company was founded in 2010 and is in Easton, Pennsylvania.
Do you love trivia as much as I do? Test your literary knowledge with a set of trivia cards from Chronicle Books. Chronicle Books is an Indie publisher from San Francisco, California that has been around since the 1960’s.
