Indie Bookstore Spotlight: Shakespeare & CO

Karen Germain

Bookstore Postcard from Missoula, Montana's Shakespeare & CO

I bring you a long overdue blog post about our January indie bookstore partner, Shakespeare & CO. I apologize for this massive time gap with the write-up of this fabulous indie bookstore, but I severely underestimated the time and energy it would take to move to a new state. We are finally getting settled in California, and I'm looking forward to focusing on Books Inside Boxes.

Shakespeare & CO is located in Missoula, Montana on the "Hip Strip." The Hip Strip is a section of town with unique stores and small businesses. The store opened in 1998 and the name may sound very familiar. Although not connected, the Missoula Shakespeare & CO, takes its name from the famous Paris bookstore of the same name. This Missoula store is not the only one who shares this moniker in tribute, you can find several Shakespeare & CO's around the world. The name for the Missoula store came as a suggestion from a good friend of bookstore owner, Garth Whitson.

The store sells new books, gift items, and stationary. They host events and pop-up stores. You can shop on their Garthazon ordering page. At first, I was confused by this, but I quickly realized that it is the owner's cheeky play on Amazon with a personalized touch. Through the Garthazon page, you can order books and merch items directly from the store and support a small business. Speaking of merch, if you're a fan of John Waters, you should definitely take a look at the store t-shirts.

In the sold-out January Literary Road Trip Box, we included a store postcard from Shakespeare & CO, as seen in the picture at the top of this post. Isn't it serene? I love the colors and the bird making off the with book. Next time you're in Missoula, make sure to visit Shakespeare & CO. Please support them remotely with a Garthazon purchase.
